St Martin-in-the-Fields

May 2008

Raeburn Drilling and Geotechnical Limited have successfully completed and commissioned their geothermal heat exchange system as part of the refurbishment of the world famous St Martin-in-the-Fields Church in Trafalgar Square, London.

This high profile and prestigious refurbishment project is being carried out by Costain Limited to whom we have been commissioned as sub-contractors. The renewal of St Martin-in-the-Fields will create modern facilities to replace what was once a series of Victorian burial vaults, which have inadequately housed many of St Martin's services for decades.

Our work consists of two 225mm boreholes sunk some 150 metres into the chalk aquifer below the London Clay to form an open-loop geothermal system. The pump and associated control unit that we installed interfaces with the building management system to control primarily cooling within the complex but can be used for heating in the winter months.

The refurbishment project was formally opened by HRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall on 28th April 2008.
